Incorrect WP PSW and Origin Error on restore PSW

Hi there, community!

In Feb 2023 I have acquired the website randomanimalpicks.com which is at the moment hosted through your service here.

Due to workload it has been about 1-2 months that I did not work on the website; so, I have tried to log in at the admin page /wp-admin/, and it keeps saying incorrect user and psw (even if I have check the PhpmyAdmin page and checked the values from there, that are actually correct).

I also have tried to ask WP to send a me a restore PSW link but it stucks on loading until it says "origin error".

Any idea about that?

vinman90 Hi there! Are you able to log in using the credentials provided in your Ezoic hosting dashboard? (navigate to Settings > Hosting > Launch Hosting Dashboard > Manage Credentials to view these logins)
That is unusual you're getting an origin error. Do you get the same error if you try resetting the password from a different browser or device?

Hello Coley, thank you for the reply.

In the Hosting Dashboard, I just have the DB credentials and the SFTP credential. I tried to get the WP credentials by accessing to the DB and looking for the "admin" information (which actually were the same as before, of course).

I just tried to reset password from phone and yes, huge load time which ends in the "origin error"

Look for the heading "Temporary wordpress credentials expired/ reset wordpress Login password" - that should give you everything that you need to get this resolved. 🙂

hey Lilla, I followed the procedure you suggested (even if , of course, I had already tried to do that) and nothing changed. Incorrect password and impossible to reset it through email

However, I noticed that when I select that MD5, the user PSW changes from what I have inserted (tried original one and the changed one ...anyway not working)

I'm not sure what might still be preventing you from logging in even after changing the credentials in PHPmyadmin, so I've reached out to our hosting team to take a closer look into this. vinman90 Hi again, as a troubleshooting step can you please try disabling all plugins and returning to a default theme? Are you able to then either update the password or log in with the current credentials?

is there a way to do it from phpmyadmin?
cause as i told you before i really can not log in, so I have no idea how to disable plug ins or change the theme being not able to log in

vinman90 Hi there - Lindsey here from Support. Yes! There is a way you can do this with SFTP versus phpadmin.

Here are some directions on how to do just this:

Steps to Deactivate and Reactivate WordPress Plugins via SFTP:

If you cannot login to your WordPress Admin panel, access your site using an SFTP client like WinSCP or Filezilla.
Connect to your website using the SFTP client (You can find this information within your Ezoic Dashboard under Settings > Hosting > WP Dashboard > Manage Credentials)
Navigate to the "/html/wp-content/" directory in your website's file structure.
Locate the "plugins" folder within the "wp-content" directory.
To deactivate all plugins, rename the "plugins" folder to "plugins_old".
To deactivate a specific plugin, open the "plugins" folder and find the folder corresponding to the particular plugin you want to deactivate. Rename this folder by adding "_old" at the end of its name.
To reactivate all plugins, change the name of the "plugins_old" folder back to "plugins".
If you encounter login issues or other problems, start by deactivating all plugins as mentioned in step 5, and check if the issue persists.
If the issue remains, rename the "plugins" folder again to "plugins_old" and begin reactivating individual plugins one by one.
Repeat step 8 after reactivating each plugin until you identify the specific plugin causing the problem.

You should be able to use this same process to return to a default theme, as well. All you need to do is head to wp-content/themes and rename your theme back to its original name :-)

Thank you Lindsey for the reply.

I tried firstly to rename plugins_old and try login : "There has been a critical error on this website. Please check your site admin email inbox for instructions."; checked the email and no email received.

I will now try to verify each single plugin but I guess it is somehow related to some plugin/option handling the email or the login option.

I'll be updating this in some hours

UPDATE 1 : by renaming the wp-mail-smtp plugin i get the same critical error (and no email) as by renaming whole plugin folder

UPDATE 2: keeping the wp-mail disable, I also disabled the wp-forms-lite one and now website is back online, (still login problem, wrong email/psw, cant reset psw through email, "Error: The email could not be sent. Your site may not be correctly configured to send emails")

vinman90 Using SQL, you can change the login details for your WordPress backend.

Open myphpadmin
Locate wp_users
Click “edit” which is located to the left of the username
Locate user_pass in the text box
Type in new password
In the “function” dropdown select “MD5”
Scroll to the bottom and select “go”

To get emails working again, you may need to look into hosting your mail system elsewhere or find a different plugin to run emails.

vinman90 are you not receiving any emails to the account associated with this site or is it just the ones related to the password reset that you are not receiving? If it's all emails, you may need to update Ezoic's copy of your DNS records to match those provided by your email client.

The only error we are seeing in your site's logs currently is the following:

[Tue Sep 19 22:02:59.604818 2023] [authz_core:error] [pid 20607] [client 10.1.65.33:42550] AH01630: client denied by server configuration: /var/www/html/wp-content/uploads/animal_images/index.php

That likely isn't related to the issue you're facing but may be worth you investigating regardless!

I think we are getting closer to the solution; I guess I should be able to log in using the phpMyAdmin admin details, but you are right, I changed the domain provider and the DNS records were not updated.

Current provider is now Aruba, before it was Namesillo(TitanMail);

I have tried to emulate the records from another domain handled by Aruba but looks like it is not receiving email (even if I can send them)

vinman90 do you have the list of any custom DNS records for this domain as they appear at Aruba? If so, editing Ezoic's copy to match may allow you to receive emails. Otherwise, you could check with your email provider for any DNS records needed on Ezoic's end.

Ok i managed to fix the email, now i can receive email from third email address; If i try to reset psw from WP, anyway, i get the same error as before "The email could not be sent. Your site may not be correctly configured to send emails", and still incorrect psw/login details!

now it is really a wp/hosting side issue

Have you been able to reset the password from within the myphp admin?
If so, you wouldn't need to 'reset password' via the Wordpress frontend, instead you'd use 'login' and use that new password.

vinman90 Hi there, Monica here. I know this thread is a bit long now, so I just want to take a moment to check in and summarise the situation at the moment.

The site is hosted on Ezoic, and you can't login to WordPress.
When you change the password in phpmyadmin it says "wrong password"
When you request a password change directly from WordPress you're not receiving the email.
Are both those things correct? Are we missing anything?

There's a couple things you could try next.
Option 1: Try logging in using the username instead of the email (identified as user_login in phpmyadmin)

Option 2: Change the WordPress admin email using the instructions in this article https://support.ezoic.com/kb/article/how-to-fix-hosting-migration-errors
If you have another email address that isn't tied to the domain, can you try using this email instead?
Then try requesting password change again, and see if the email arrives.

As with all database changes we recommend being careful when making these changes.

I also wanted to check if you've already restored a default theme on your site? If not, can you do this as well?

Yes, site is hosted here; when i try to change the password from phpmyadmin it still say "wrong user/psw", even by trying to use the MD5 you suggested (just to say, when I select MD5 the password I inserted get changed in some numeric and letter password different from the one I've add, anyway not working).

Yes, when i ask for password reset I'm not getting any email, even trying, as you suggested, to add a different email (I have tried with an @hotmail one), I still get this error "The email could not be sent. Your site may not be correctly configured to send emails".

Yes, I tried to use the login name instead of the email, still the same problem.

I can add that if I try to rename the plugin folders (disable them), do the login with the email and psw, i get this "There has been a critical error on this website. Please check your site admin email inbox for instructions." Important: for some reasons which I do not know, this happens only by trying to log in with the email; if I log in with user name and PSW i get the usual error "The password you entered for the username -- is incorrect. " This could be a clue someho, maybe.

I tried editing also the admin email in wp options and still nothing, i get the email sending error;

How can i modify to a default theme? I have found the template record in the wp-options, where the admin email was, and it is saying "Newspaper"... should I change this? with what?

My feeling is that somehow website is not communicating with the DB properly.

UPDATE : I tried editing the voices "stylesheet" and "template" by changing the previous value "Newspaper" to "twentytwentythree". I cant see any changes and log in still not working...

vinman90 Just to clarify a point that may be confusing, MD5 is a form of encryption.

So, let's say I enter the password "Password". MD5 might encode that as %%£%££%(**£, or some other random string of nonsense. My password is still "Password", but in PHPMyAdmin, it will show as the encoded version for security purposes. Are you able to login if you try using the password that you've set (and not the string of characters that are generated by MD5)?
